Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows: A Book Review

Why we love dogs_book_coverMelanie Joy is a professor of psychology and sociology at the University of Massachusetts and is the author of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows. Her book covers everything from the understanding of why we consume and use animal products to being self-conscious about the environment.  As she covers these important topics, she digs more and more into animals’ ability to feel pain.

Melanie Joy educates thousands about inhumane actions that take place all over the world.  Her style of writing intrigues others to take action to help the environment and you yourself. It involves the question of why we love some animals and eat others. For example, in the first chapter, she explains that if you compare cow meat to dog meat, you’ll automatically have sympathy for a dog, but not for a cow necessarily.

It’s interesting how Joy puts different human emotions in perspective. We think different things and have opposing opinions, yet we share one similar feeling about how eating one kind of animal sounds gross while the other is juicy.
