ISIS controls one of the biggest oil fields in Syria. “Millions of dollars in oil revenue have made ISIS one of the wealthiest terror groups in history. Experts estimate the value of the output from the dozen or so oil fields and refineries under its control in Iraq and Syria at $1 million to $2 million a day,”according to The New York Times article published in September. When ISIS takes control of a city they keep selected services operating, but they do it with brutal force to impose their vision.

What is ISIS? When did they form? ISIS used to go by a different name: Al-Qaeda in Iraq. During the post 2006 “surge,” U.S. troops, along ally Sunni militias, took down Al-Qaeda in Iraq. A few years past, and in 2011, Al-Qaeda in Iraq restarted its offenses but with a new name, ISIS. While it was setting back up, fighters were freeing prisoners held by the Iraqi government. Doing this strengthened its forces. The extremist group ISIS uses very brutal tactics like mass kidnappings, beheadings and other things while combating what it perceives to be its enemies.
