Spring Sport Injuries

With the spring sport season officially under way, it’s a good time to start making sure you’re taking care of your body.

It can be difficult going from one sport season to another; this is generally when an injury occurs from overuse of certain muscles and joints. With that being said the most common injury seen in the springtime is overuse injuries. One common overuse injury is shin pain, typically shin splints.

Along with shin pain there are shoulder and elbow injuries, due to the overuse of those muscles and joints. It doesn’t help if you haven’t exercised those muscles for a few months. To prevent such injuries, there are rehab exercises that help regain and gain strength in those regions of the body that haven’t been used in a while.

As an athlete, making sure your body is healthy is key in preventing injuries. “Eating well, drinking enough water, and getting enough sleep,” said Danielle LaFlamme: Harwoods Athletic Trainer. These are three simple steps both athletes and people in general should take to make sure they are healthy.

If you are an athlete that works out on the side or is in a strengthening program, remember to keep things balanced. Make sure you are working out all muscle groups and not over doing one area.

Whether you’re an athlete or not, Danielle is always available to the students if they have an injury. LaFlamme is usually in her office which is located down stairs before the weight room, there is a big sign at the bottom of the stairs pointing to her office. She generally arrives to school around 10-10:30 and is always around after school.
