Seussical the Musical!

For years, between the months of January and April, Harwood students have been really busy singing, dancing, acting, or simply having fun with friends while preparing for the musical. This is the time of year when students work hard to prepare such a theatrical event in the spring.

Director Scott Weigand, who has been directing musicals for ten years, the last five being at Harwood, chose to perform Seussical The Musical, which first debuted on Broadway in 2000. It’s based different books by Dr. Seuss, books that most people have read or heard about during childhood. The musical contains about twenty of Seuss’s stories, such as Horton Hears a Who! and Horton Hatches the Egg, and Miss Gertrude McFuzz. Everyone knows Dr. Seuss books are full of special and fantastic characters.

According to Weigand, “[There] is a great blend of music, choreography and acting, giving us lots of skills to work on, and build for future shows.”

This year Kiana Haskin, a senior at Harwood, who has been working on stage crew since freshmen year, designed the entire set this year. Stephanie Weigand, who has been teaching music at Harwood for the past three years, is responsible for all the singing of the show. Chris Rivers is directing the Harwood band playing all of the music for the show. Amea Cervantes, new to the Harwood musical staff, is choreographing the dance. According to Director Weigand, all of these pieces “are going well. We are coming into crunch time, but I haven’t started to stress out yet, so everything must be going okay.”

Being part of the show, I personally think, it’s very fun, not just because of dancing and singing, but I really think being part of a musical is one of the funniest ways to spend time and make friends, even if it can be hard sometimes.

The show will be on April 9th and 10th at 7.30 p.m., and on April 11th at 1.30 pm and 7.30 p.m. I really hope everyone will come and enjoy it!
