The recent opening of the senior lounge for Harwood Union’s current seniors has people talking all around the school. The lounge is a space in which senior students can hang out and socialize. The lounge, placed relatively at the middle point of the school, is equipped with many fun commodities. Some of these include a foosball table, projector, comfy chairs, bean bags, a bar, a few tables and a small putting green. Students love to make use of the space and it seems to bring the seniors closer together.
Student Tanner Hacket said this about the space,”Just being with your friends and having a chill place with good natural sunlight is probably one of the biggest benefits“
Hackett, senior student at Harwood, uses the amenities of the lounge practically everyday, like most other seniors. At lunch time there is quite frequently a group of students watching shows and hanging out, and during free periods one will find various students working inside during the day.
With all this being said, The lounge had students in quite the uproar towards the beginning of the year.
Students were originally under the impression that the lounge would be opened after the first half week of school. They were excited to use the new space that they had been restricted from for three prior years. After the first week past the class of 2025 still found themselves locked out of the space. This predicament sparked some confusion through the seniors class. Senior student Sean Geary said this about the particular event, “I was a little bit confused and mad when I saw that it had still not been opened, I mostly just wanted a guaranteed place to sit at lunch, something that kates garden cannot always offer because of the lack of seats.” Sean wasn’t alone in the frustration, seniors started to become antsy after more and more loungless weeks passed by. After talking to Harwood English teacher Larry Gravell, we gathered that he felt we were doing a much better job at respecting the space given to us,(Kates garden). This sparked the question, why is it still not open? School hall monitor Yvett said that although she wasn’t certain, she was under the impression that the delay of the lounges opening was due to lack of time and availability for staff to host the meeting.
Although the whole scenario sparked some anger from the senior class, it is now open and students have never been happier. Conclusively, the future of the lounge seems bright for future senior classes. Kids use it and take great care of it every day, leaving a great image of the space and allowing its legacy to live on.
