Whether you were watching for the love of the game, the funny ads, or the amazing halftime show, most Americans gathered around their TVs to watch the Superbowl on Sunday, February 9th.
Even if you dislike both teams, they had their seasons on the line but the Chiefs also had the first “3-peat” in NFL history on the line as well. The stakes had never been higher for the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes with his legacy on the line. The Eagles also had a historic season on the line, mainly for running back Saquon Barkley. In the first half, the Eagle’s defense dominated the Chiefs having multiple interceptions and sacks, holding them at 0 at the end of the first half. The opposite was true for the Eagles’ offense, who scored numerous touchdowns.
When Common Ground asked students about this year’s Super Bowl teams the majority of students were unsatisfied with both teams. “I hope both teams lose,¨ said senior Tanner Hackett. “I don’t like either team,¨ added Gavin Clark Viola.
As the game came to halftime both teams went to their locker rooms to talk over the previous half. While this was happening Kendrick Lamar came out to perform in front of the crowd. He plays popular songs such as “Humble,” “TV Off,” and “Luther.” The highlight of the show was when the hit diss track called “Not Like Us” was played. Kendrick’s performance had a clear tone of social justice.
¨I don’t consider myself a Kendrick Lamar fan, but after watching the Halftime Show I would like to discover some of Kendrick’s music for the second time,¨ said senior Atticus Ellis
As the second half came to an end, the Eagles were crowned Super Bowl champs. While the Chiefs played better in the second half the Eagles’ defense was still no match for them with the final score being 40-22 Eagles. The Eagles defeated the Chief’s potential 3 and cemented Saquan Barkley as having one of the greatest running back seasons ever.
¨While I thought it was a good game I didn’t like how they let the Chiefs score in the fourth quarter I was hoping for a blowout¨ continued Hackett.
Common Ground asks students toughs on the game the day compared to others in the past. ¨I thought it was fun to watch it watch because of the people I was with but overall compared to ones I have seen in the past I thought it was somewhat boring,” opined Atticus Ellis.
It’s safe to say that the Harwood student body hopes that next year different team make it to the big game.
