The mentor club is a program that provides support for middle schoolers through having an older role model.
Every member of the mentor program, mentors and mentees alike, have been matched up with their mentees or mentors in our club’s big reveal on Friday, October 18th in the Harwood Gym.
This is the fourth year of the mentor club. The first and Second year Mr. B ran the club but he had to leave the school; last year Jen Dreimiller and Melodie Frank stepped up to the plate and took over the club, and this year unfortunately Melodie moved on to a different school but luckily Mr. Ibson graciously gave his time to help it out.
“I worked a lot with both middle schoolers and highschoolers and it kind of just made sense. Mentoring is the best! I like to support the middle schoolers but I can’t do it by myself so having a mini army of supporters is amazing.” said Jen when asked about what made her want to lead this club.
This program has grown exponentially this year and has almost tripled in size.
“After Mr. B left, we reined it in a lot more last year with only 20 mentors but we felt like we could open it up a lot more. So this year, we opened it up to a lot more and over 60 people applied to be mentors! Which is awesome because a lot of the middle schoolers wanted one. We had so many middle schoolers interested that I’m glad we were able to find mentors for them all!” Jen commented on the amount of interest this year.
Commonground reached out to Junior Felix Kretz and asked him a couple questions about the club. When asked about why he feels this club is so important he said, “I feel like it’s good for the younger kids to have a good positive role model, and this club provides that for them.”
We were also able to contact Atticus Ellis, a senior here at Harwood and hear his thoughts on the club. He says, “It’s been pretty good. I’ve really enjoyed my time. It’s been a unique experience within the Harwood community, I enjoy fostering a better environment for our young learners,” when asked about how his time in the club has been.
As you can see, the mentor club is an amazing experience for everyone and offers great opportunities.
They also offer many different activities such as joining the middle schoolers for their ski and ride days at Sugarbush and a bowling trip at the end of the year.
The mentor club is so excited to be starting up and they would like to thank all of their new members and returning members..
