On November 14th, Harwood hosted its second college fair this year. The fair was featured in the library during ELO 2, and had twenty-two presenters from all around New England. However, for the majority of that time, the library was lacking students.
According to Ellen Berrings, the college fair’s main goal is to “enable students to have access to a variety of potential institutions and other kinds of organizations that they can have conversations with […] all in one space so that they can explore some options that might be a fit for them for the future.”
An additional benefit is that these conversations are opportunities for students to develop their communication skills through talking to representatives.
Of the twenty-two presenters, there were eighteen colleges, as well as four different military booths.
After the large success of the college fair hosted in Harwood’s library earlier in the year, you would expect a high turnout for this college fair as well. Despite this, the library was mostly desolate compared to the college fair earlier this year. The reason? Berrings explains, “The first college fair everyone was scheduled to go […] so, everyone attended. This college fair was voluntary, so students could attend if they wanted to” but attendance was not required.
Harwood hopes to continue holding college fairs in the future, however, the next college fair will likely not be until next fall. According to Berrings, “It’s a pretty traditional thing that happens here in the fall.”
