On September 28th, 2024, Harwood Union High School hosted its homecoming dance. This year’s was more highly attended than previous years.
“Many of us can take a day to dress up and have a great night with friends”, says an anonymous student.
Harwood Union High School started celebrating homecoming 2 years ago. In the United States, it is traditional to celebrate homecoming, but Harwood Union High School had never one until 2022. Staff hoped it would integrate a tradition of welcoming classes and new students while reuniting with alumni.
The Homecoming of this year was held in the cafeteria, something that provoked strong reactions. Senior Caelin Brooks says, “I didn’t like that the homecoming was in the cafeteria, I don’t know, just I didn’t like it.”
The Harwood Union High School administrative team decided to resurrect homecoming as students enjoy the tradition.
Commonground asked a teacher, Lawrence Gravelle, how homecoming could improve next year. “I appreciate the volunteers who did the decoration. I think more people can work on it. We could make the cafeteria feel more like a dance hall, and maybe have a new DJ. ”
While the timing and location of the next homecoming isn’t scheduled yet it is more certain that homecoming’s back for good.
