Harwood’s new annual tradition, the Winter Ball, is upon us. Hosted by the beautiful Round Barn Inn, our first Winter dance is sure to be a smash. “They said they loved what we were doing and loved the cause, and they chose to donate their space, which was really, really kind of them,” said Cole Flaherty, Harwood senior and leader of the middle school Mentor program. Almost all tickets were sold out -for ten dollars a piece, and all profits go to the Mentor program.

Skylar Bradley, known affectionately as Mr. B, is the mastermind behind it all. He hopes to raise $1,000 as well as spirits! Senior Ella Dice, student government member, commented, “We keep having dances because Mr. B keeps encouraging students to not give up on Harwood and to create a better community.” And, wow, has he! 

After our first ever homecoming dance earlier this fall, Mr. B spoke fondly of the event, “It’s super exciting to see how happy everyone looks when they’re dancing and all dressed up. It’s such a fun time for the students. That’s why I do my job, to make the kids smile.” Homecoming was a big success in many ways, raking in over $500 towards the mentor program, and bringing a large group of students together for a good time.

“We wanted to do it as a fundraiser for the mentor program, but also to build a closer community within our school especially because January is a very, very blue and boring month,” said Flaherty. “I think it’ll make our school feel a little more like a family.” 

The goal of the middle school Mentor program is to better the Harwood experience for younger classes. “So basically, it’s just like having a friend and giving them advice, and really just making them enjoy being at Harwood,” Flaherty added. 

While older Harwood generations may be disappointed they didn’t get all these events, future students can look forward to them for years to come. Part of this choice was the fundraising aspect, but mainly, the success of Homecoming has inspired the staff and students! Harwood’s spirit needed this boost especially after coming out of COVID, the dances are serving their purpose. “We didn’t really have any issues at all at Homecoming which is huge,” said Mr. B. “Next year Homecoming is going to be a bigger thing. My goal is to have a pep rally included with the actual bonfire and make it be a full event of spirit.” 

So if you’re going to Winter Ball, be on your best behavior tonight, and enjoy the festivities!
