Harwood’s Girls’ Ice Hockey team’s season started on Saturday, the 14th of December with a loss against South Burlington. However, the team is determined to achieve their goals for the season and to raise as much money as possible during their fundraising event.
During preseason, coach Eric Boyden asked the team to come out with three aspirations for their upcoming season. After long discussions, the team decided they wanted to be successful in winning one game, for everyone to get a point (either an assist or a goal), and to be kind to each other at all times.
This season, a surprising number of new skaters have joined the team, which hadn’t had enough players for the last few years and middle school had to step up to help the high school team. There’s four new offensive players, two new defensive players, and two new goalies in their lines.
“I wanted to play since I was younger but didn’t have the chance in my country” Senior German exchange student Klara Weller said “It’s even better than I thought it would be. The team is awesome and really welcoming”
The Highlander’s first game was a hard one against Burlington High School. This team is in division 1, while Harwood is in division 2, and won the state championship last year. Even though Harwood lost, the team proved that the Highlanders never give up.
The Girls and boys ice hockey teams will be working together on their fundraising event. Both teams will be raising money for The Veteran’s Place, a transitional housing option for veterans, on Saturday January 25th. The girls will be playing against Brattleboro at 5 pm, and the boys are playing against North Country Union at 7 pm at the Ice Center in Waterbury..
The teams will be selling beanies for $15 and baseball caps for $25. Other ways to support the veterans will be offered; in between periods there will be a 50/50 and Chuck a Puck.
The girls’ ice hockey team is a clear example of the Harwood spirit: never give up and always give your best.
